The story of Carrefour began in 1959 when Marcel Fournier, who ran a Novelties shop in Annecy, met the Badin-Defolé family, who ran a food wholesaler in Laneux. Inspired by America, Carrefour founders opened the first hypermarket in France on July 15, 1963 in Sainte-Geneviève des Bois (91). The hypermarket was the first of its kind in France and offered a wide range of goods at low prices in his over 2,500 m² of self-service sales space with 400 free parking spaces.
