Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) is a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Founded in 1954, the company is currently China’s fifth largest automaker, with sales of 2.14 million in 2021. The company produces and sells vehicles under its own brands such as Trumpchi, Aion, Hycan and in joint ventures with foreign brands such as GAC -Toyota, GAC-Honda and GAC-Mitsubishi.
It also produces electric cars under some of the previously listed brands, including dedicated electric cars such as the Aion and Hycan. It produces buses under the GAC Bus brand. Other brands associated with GAC include Everus and Hino for commercial vehicles. In 2021, it was the fourth largest Chinese electric car manufacturer in the Chinese market with a 4 percent market share. 123,660 units of electric cars were sold in 2021 and more than 20,000 units in March 2022. By December 2022, the production capacity of electric cars is planned to be doubled to 400,000 per year.
About Company
Guangzhou Automobile Group was founded in 1955, and in 2005, it became a joint venture between Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group and a joint stock company. As of 2009, it was the sixth largest automaker in China. In 2009, the company acquired 29% of Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer Changfeng Automobile, becoming its largest shareholder. GAC acquired the rest of Changfeng in 2011, completing the acquisition of the company. GAC, previously listed through the back door of Denway Motors, listed under its own name on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2010.
This year shareholders of Denway Motors approved its privatization by GAC. Denway Motors was delisted on 25 August 2010 and replaced by Guangzhou Automobile Group (SEHK: 2238) in a share swap on 30 August 2010. In late 2010, GAC acquired a 51% stake in Gonow, a Chinese manufacturer of mid-size SUVs, compacts and pickups. In December 2010, GAC launched a new Trumpch brand. Its first product was based on the Alfa Romeo 166. In 2010, GAC was among the top ten Chinese automakers, ranking sixth with sales of 724,200 vehicles. In 2011, the company maintained its position as the sixth Chinese automaker in terms of production volume, with GAC producing 740,400 vehicles that year.
Working at GAC Group
GAC Group has repeatedly spoken about plans to bring the model to the US market. The Trumpchi debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2013, marking the world premiere of the Trumpchi E-Jet concept. The company came to life in 2017 with the introduction of three of its SUVs and two limousines. In January 2018, Trumpchi said it announced five new models and one SUV concept, the Emberge. GAC established RandD teams in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
On May 15, 2015, GAC Group launched a ceremony to celebrate the opening of its Lebanon office under Bazerji Motors SAL. On May 29, 2015, GAC Group partnered with Doha Marketing and Services Company (DOMASCO) to market its vehicles to local customers in the Middle East. At the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, the company announced that it is pushing back its sales plan to the first half of 2020. GAC sponsored the 2011 World Table Tennis Championships in Rotterdam, was the title sponsor of the ITTF World Tour in 2012 and the 2013 World Table Tennis Championships in its hometown of Guangzhou served as title sponsor. Guangqi Honda is a 50:50 joint venture between GAC and Honda, which has produced a number of Honda and Acura brand vehicles for the Chinese market since 1999. It started selling its Everus brand in 2011. GAC Mitsubishi Motors is a joint venture between GAC and Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. It was launched in September 2012 following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in late 2010.
