Founded in Berlin in 1897 as Hotelbetriebs-Aktiengesellschaft, the group currently manages 78 five-star hotels and apartments in 34 countries. Company claims to be the oldest luxury hotel group in Europe. Its history began in 1897 with the establishment of the “Hotelbetriebs-Aktiengesellschaft” hotel in Berlin. A parallel development was M. Kempinski and Co., founded by Berthold Kempinski, was acquired by “Hotelbetriebs-Aktiengesellschaft” in 1953.
Berthold Kempinski was born on October 10, 1843 in Posen (then a province of Germany and now Poland). The Kempinski family has been successfully working in the wine business since 1862. In 1872, the business was expanded to Berlin, where Berthold Kempinski opened a wine shop of his own name on Friedrichstraße. In 1889, he opened a restaurant on Leipziger Straße, the largest in Berlin. Since Berthold Kempinski and his wife Helena did not have a son, they invited their son-in-law Richard Unger (1866-1947) to the company. Berthold Kempinski later transferred the company to his son-in-law with the condition that he keep the Kempinski name.
