About Company

Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker founded Starbucks in 1971 in Pike Place Market of Seattle. In the early 1980s, they sold the company to Howard Schultz, who, after traveling to Milan, Italy, decided to turn the coffee shop into a cafe serving espresso-based drinks. Schultz’s first tenure as CEO from 1986 to 2000 led the franchise to  aggressive expansion, first in Seattle, then on the West Coast of the United States. Schultz was succeeded by Orin Smith, who led the company for five years and established Starbucks as a major producer of fair trade coffee, growing sales to $5 billion. Jim Donald served as CEO from 2005 to 2008 and orchestrated massive profit growth. Schultz returned as CEO in 2007-08. during the financial crisis of 2010 and spent the next decade growing the company’s market share, expanding its offerings and refocusing the brand on corporate social responsibility.

Current CEO Kevin Johnson succeeded Schultz in 2017. In March 2022, They announced that Schultz would return as CEO in April 2022. In addition to beverages and food,  official Starbucks merchandise such as mugs, drinks and buckets are available in many stores and coffee press. There are also several designated “Starbucks Evenings” locations that offer beer, wine and appetizers. Starbucks-branded coffee, ice cream, and bottled iced coffee beverages are sold in grocery stores in the United States and other countries. In 2010, the company launched the Starbucks Reserve program for single-origin coffees and high-end coffee shops. The plan was to open 1,000 Reserve cafes by the end of 2017. It has six roasteries with tasting rooms and 43 coffee shops as part of the program. The newest roastery  opened on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile in November 2019 and is the  largest Starbucks location in the world.

As of 2018, Schultz was the company’s first CEO emeritus. Analysts have long said the company’s management must determine how to combat higher material costs and increased competition from cheaper fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts. In October 2015, Starbucks hired its first CTO, Gerri Martin-Flickinger, to lead its technology team. Starbucks maintains control over the production processes by liaising with farmers to secure beans, roasting the beans themselves and managing distribution to all retail locations. In addition, Starbucks coffee and farm share policies require suppliers to inform Starbucks of what portion of wholesale prices paid goes to farmers.
