About

Kuwait Airways is the national airline of Kuwait, with headquarters at Kuwait International Airport in Al Farwaniyah Governorate. It operates scheduled international services throughout the Middle East,  the Indian subcontinent, Europe, Southeast Asia and North America from  Kuwait International Airport. The  history of the airline originates from 1953, when  a group of Kuwaiti businessmen formed Kuwait National Airways; Initially, the government charged 50 percent interest.

In the same year, a five-year management contract was signed with British International Airlines (BIA), a subsidiary of BOAC  in Kuwait, which operated charter flights and provided maintenance services. Two Dakotas were purchased and operations began on  March 16, 1954. In the first year of operation, the airline carried 8,966 passengers. It was in the month July of the year 1955 the name Kuwait Airways was taken. In May 1958 a new  management and operating agreement was signed, this time directly with BOAC. Kuwait Airways took over BIA in April 1959.

Privatization was considered in the mid-1990s, in  the post-gulf war, when the airline had a serious financial problem. The company was converted into a joint stock company in 2004. The government approved the draft regulations for this privatization on July 21, 2008. The plan was  to sell up to 35% of the shares to a long-term investor and distribute another 40%  to the public, with the remaining 25% shares owned by the government. These plans also considered excluding domestic carriers such as Jazeera Airways as potential bidders.

In addition, the government has committed to keeping the workforce unchanged for at least five years, and those who do not wish to remain employed will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other government dependents without changing pay and  similar working conditions. In 2011, the Privatization Commission valued the airline at US$805 million, advised by  Citigroup, Ernst and Young and Seabury. The process was expected to be completed in March 2011.

Another important aspect of Kuwait Airways is its sustainability efforts. The airline has taken a number of steps to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize its impact on the environment. For example, it has implemented fuel-saving measures, such as reducing weight on its aircraft and optimizing flight paths, and it has also made a commitment to purchase carbon offsets to mitigate the emissions generated by its flights.

This membership allows the airline to leverage the resources and expertise of other leading airlines in the region and to collaborate on important initiatives aimed at promoting the aviation industry in the Middle East.
