On June 7, 1934, the first batch of Bahraini oil was exported to Japan from the Standard Oil Company tanker El Segundo Sitra Terminal. Construction of the Bahrain refinery began as early as 1936, with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day. The increase in refinery activity meant that more educated and skilled oil workers had to move to Bahrain with their families. In 1933, the temporary residences near the first oil well became the foundation of a dedicated village, named Awali by the then ruler of Bahrain, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
