Maersk is a Danish shipping company engaged in maritime and inland freight transport and related services such as supply chain management and port operations. Maersk was the world’s largest container shipping company and ship operator from 1996 to 2022.
The company is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, with subsidiaries and offices in 130 countries as of 2020, and approximately 83,000 employees worldwide. It is a publicly traded family business, as the company is controlled by the Møller family of the same name through holding companies. In September 2016, Maersk Group announced that it would split into two separate divisions: Transport and Logistics and Energy. The company’s turnover in 2018 was $39 billion (2019). In the 2020 Forbes Global 2000 survey, Møller-Maersk was the 622nd largest public company in the world.
About Company
(A.P.) Møller (1876-1965) founded Maersk in Svendborg in April 1904. A.P. Møller had 4 children, of all by his first wife, Chastine Estelle Roberta Mc-Kinney. Their second child was (Arnold) Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller (1913-2012), who became a partner in 1939 and, after his father’s death, head of the company. In 1993, Jess Søderberg replaced him as CEO. He continued as president until December 2003, when he was 90 and Michael Pram Rasmussen took over. Until his death, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller was one of the “managing owners” of the company and was the president of Odense Steel Shipyard until 2 May 2006. In 2016, A.P. Moller – Maersk announced its strategic decision to focus exclusively on container logistics and dismantle the conglomerate structure by separating oil and gas activities.
The majority interest in Maersk Tankers was sold to A.P. Moller Holding in the year 2017. Maersk Oil was then sold to total S.A. in year 2018 and Maersk Drilling became a separate listed company in April 2019. In 2017, the company was one of the biggest victims of NotPetya. ransomware attack that severely disrupted its operations for several months. In 2021, the company bought 8 carbon neutral ships for £1 billion. In August of year 2021, Maersk joined the BEC Low Carbon Charter.

Maersk Oil was founded in 1962 when Maersk was granted a license for oil and gas exploration and production in the Danish North Sea sector. Maersk Oil is involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas in many parts of the world. Total oil production is over 600,000 barrels per day (95,000 m³/d) and gas production is up to approximately one billion cubic feet (28,000,000 m³) per day. Most of the production comes from the North Sea, both in the Danish and British sectors, but there is also offshore production in Qatar, Algeria and Kazakhstan.
In addition to the production facilities mentioned above, Maersk Oil is engaged in exploration in Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Norway in the North Sea, Qatar, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Angola, the Gulf of Mexico (US sector), Turkmenistan and Oman ,Morocco, Brazil, Colombia and Suriname. Most of these activities are not 100% owned, but operate through consortium membership. The company has developed production techniques suitable for particularly harsh environments (North Sea, etc.) and drilling techniques that extract oil from problematic underground conditions. August 21, 2017 A. P. Møller – Mærsk A/S announced that it has signed an agreement to sell Mærsk Olie og Gas A/S to Total S.A. for $7.45 billion in a stock and debt transaction. The transaction required regulatory and competition approvals and was completed on March 8, 2018, when Maersk Oil became part of Total. The largest operating unit of A.P. Moller-Maersk in terms of turnover and personnel (approximately 25,000 employees in 2012) is Maersk Line. In 2013, the company described itself as the world’s largest ocean carrier, operating more than 600 ships with a capacity of 3.8 million TEU containers.
