Sharjah is the capital of the emirate of same name. The emirate shares legal, political, military and economic functions with other UAE emirates within a federal framework, although each emirate has specific functions such as civil law enforcement and the provision and maintenance of local facilities. Sharjah has been ruled by the Al Qasim dynasty since the 18th century. The city is a centre of culture and industry, generating 7.4 percent of the UAE’s GDP alone.
The city covers an area of about 235 km and has a population of more than 800,000 (2008). The sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in the emirate of Sharjah without a liquor license, and due to the Muslim majority of the region, alcohol is not served in Sharjah’s hotels, restaurants, or other outlets. This helped Sharjah increase the number of Muslim tourists visiting the country. WHO has officially named Sharjah as a healthy city. The 2016 edition of QS Best Student Cities ranked Sharjah as the 68th best university city in the world. Sharjah is considered the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates and was the capital of Islamic culture in 2014. UNESCO has chosen Sharjah as the Book Capital of 2019.

Sharjah Cricket Stadium has hosted nearly 218 cricket One Day Internationals, more than any other ground, and 4 test matches. Sharjah is also in the UAE Pro League. There is also a chess club in Sharjah. As IPL 2020 was held in the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah Cricket Stadium was one of the three stadiums where the matches were held. Sharjah Heritage Museum is located near Bait Al Naboodah, which is just opposite Soouq Al Arsah. It is an architecturally designed two-storey detached house. Built around a shady courtyard, it is dedicated to reconstructing family life years ago.
