UNESCO has designated Sharjah as the Book Capital of the World 2019. The Heart of Sharjah heritage project was implemented to preserve and restore the Old City of Sharjah and restore it to its 1950s state. The five-phase project, to be completed in 2025, will be implemented by Shurooq, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, together with the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, the Sharjah Museums Department and the Sharjah Art Foundation. Sharjah International Book Fair is a cultural event held in Sharjah every year. It started in 1982 and now attracts publishers, readers and speakers from all over the world.
